Hemel Hempstead

Hemel Hempstead is a settlement since the 8-th century and became town with a special charter in the far 1539 by King Henry VIII. It significantly developed after the Second World War as a new town. It is an important transport hub and has a number of information technology and telecommunication companies. The name of the town comes from the Anglo Saxon times and `stead` or `stede` simply means place in Old English. There are remains of a Roman Villa from the time of Roman Britain which is around the town and also remains from a Roman burial mound. Hemel is divided into residential neighbourhoods like many first generation new towns and each one has its own `village centre` with a lot of shops, pubs and services.
